Mallet Percussion – Condenser (pair)
The whole family of mallet percussion records well with condenser microphones. This choice well help to bring out the attack and unique tone of each instrument’s material.
Tho smaller versions, like the Xyolphone/Glockenspiel, may be represented well with a single microphone, larger instruments in the family will do better when recorded in stereo to ensure each note can be heard clearly. (Marimba, Vibraphone)
Place each microphone about a 1/3 of the way in from the left and right side, and point that down at the keys. Keeping the microphones at least a foot away will allow them to more evenly record each note on the instrument.
Similar to the piano, We are used to hearing Low as Left and High as Right.
