A reference track is a path to follow to guide you towards your target sound. This can be a song that has a musicality, instrumentation, or mix structure that you aspire to achieve. A great reference frames the outcome of the mix. It doesn’t have to be a perfect fit, there will always be some differences. It can help to think of your reference as a picture frame, and your mix is the beautiful picture within!

The #1 reason to use a reference is FAMILIARITY. Familiarity to other songs in that style or genre. To best meet your listeners expectations, choose 3-4 songs to use as a target to aim for throughout the mixing process. There references frame your ideal sound, style and balance.
